Miracle Berry Vs Goji Berry

While Goji berries and Miracle Berries have a similar size, shape, and color, their benefits could not be more different. Let's explore the distinctions between the two in this blog.

Miracle Berry:

What are Miracle Berries?

Miracle Berries, scientifically known as Synsepalum Dulcificum, originate from West Africa, particularly Ghana. With a history dating back centuries, these berries have been used for their unique properties. When mberry began, Miracle Berries were almost more expensive than gold in weight.

What does Miracle Fruit do?

Miracle fruit contains a glycoprotein in its flesh that can temporarily alter taste perception, typically for up to 45 minutes, although individual taste bud response may vary. This protein, Miraculin, acts as a coating on the taste buds, transforming the perception of sour, bitter, or spicy flavors into sweetness on the tongue.

What is mberry used for?

Originally used in West Africa to sweeten foods during times of famine, Miracle Berries now find their use in "Flavour Tripping" experiences. Over the past 15+ years, mberry and Miracle Berries have been utilized for various purposes, including aversions to metallic tastes, managing blood sugars, and appealing to picky and health-conscious eaters.

What forms of Miracle Berry are available?

Currently in the U.S., there are five widely available forms of miracle berry to purchase. Here's an overview to help you decide:

  • Tablets: The more red/pink the tablets are, the higher the concentration of Miracle Fruit (be sure to check for any added colors or ingredients). For example, mberry uses approximately 3 berries in each tablet, resulting in a deep red color. Other tablets may be speckled with red but mostly white, indicating a higher proportion of "filler" compared to Miracle Berry Powder.
  • Freeze Dried: There are two options: whole berries and halves. Whole berries are preferable as halved berries can feel like popcorn and may get stuck in the gums. Additionally, with most halved freeze-dried berries, you have to eat two halves, essentially one whole berry. On top of that, you might even be able to grow your own tree from the seed!
  • Powder: Powdered Miracle Fruit is similar to tablets; however, 100% pure Miracle Fruit powder without a stabilizer can become clumpy and hard as a rock. Most powders are mixed with cornstarch. Keep an eye on the color as it can give you a good idea of the quality.
  • Plant: Choose a plant based on your ability to care for it. Miracle Berry plants are delicate and require patience. An adult plant or seedling will suffice, but be prepared to provide extra care for this plant.
  • Fresh: Acquiring fresh miracle berries has always been quite expensive. Why? Once the berries are picked, they have a maximum of 24 hours before they must be frozen, consumed, or freeze-dried. Purchasing fresh miracle berries involves overnight shipping with specific instructions to eat them immediately. We recommend going with freeze-dried berries so you can still enjoy the true form of the berry at your own pace.

Can you cook with Miracle Berry?

Miracle berries, in any form, cannot withstand high temperatures as the protein, Miraculin, loses its effectiveness when exposed to heat. Therefore, they are best used to complement a variety of foods and beverages.

Goji Berry:

What are Goji Berries?

Goji berries, also known as Lycium Barbarum, originate from Asia, particularly China. Unlike miracle berries, Goji berries are considered a superfood due to their high antioxidant content. They contain various vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, making them nutritionally valuable.

How are Goji Berries consumed?

Goji berries are available in dried, juice, and powdered forms. Dried Goji berries are commonly added to smoothies, acai bowls, salads, or enjoyed as a standalone snack. They offer a sweet and slightly tangy taste, reminiscent of mberry's magic berries.

What are Goji Berries used for?

Goji berries are highly regarded for their health benefits, primarily due to their antioxidant properties. They are considered a traditional medicine in Asia, believed to nourish yin energy, support liver and kidney functions, and promote overall well-being. Additionally, Goji berries are classified as apoptogenic herbs, aiding the body's ability to adapt to stress and maintain balance.

Can you cook with Goji Berries?

Yes! Goji berries can be found in most grocery stores and are commonly included in restaurant menus. They can be used as a topping on acai bowls or incorporated into various dishes, adding sweetness and texture. Goji berries are versatile and pair well with a wide range of foods.
